ABOUT ME

Hi there!

My Design philosophy:

I have come to formulate my own conclusion on what Interior Design is to me. It is the focus on the user (e.g. needs, wants, comfort etc.), object and space within an existing shell. It is a reaction to a found space. Interior Design has many scales of focus from micro to macro, such as product design to the interiors of a whole building.  It aids productivity, health, well-being, comfort and happiness within a building if applied and understood correctly. ‘Interior Architecture is a complex and deeply-layered activity, which is at the service of all human needs’ (Coles & House 2007). Thus the following must always be incorporated in the design of an interior space; ergonomics, anthropometrics, user control, (individuality), natural daylight and ventilation. Attention should never only be focused on the aesthetics of the space (many people assume that is the function of an Interior Designer), as the popular saying goes ‘beauty fades’ but the core of the design remains. If the core is poor (people will notice this after utilizing the space for a while) people’s reactions will change with regards to the design. I agree with Farson (2008) that design should not just look good…it should work.

Interior Design is human-centered; it is spaces created for human enjoyment. “Design is everywhere…It touches and affects everyone. Design is human-centered.” (Maurer 2010)

Buildings are primarily social systems providing a space for human activity. For this very important fact it is crucial that indoor spaces satisfy, accommodate and enhance every need and experience (and more) of the occupant.

During my honours year I was very interested in the topic of human comfort within buildings. Another topic that I briefly explored was that of environmental psychology in the built environment. Environmental Psychology examines the subconscious reactions and experiences of humans with regards to their surrounding environment.

Now having said all of the above I feel just as strongly about creating interior spaces for animals. . I believe that such studies are just as important in the veterinary or animal related industry, and is currently vastly undervalued. If spaces are designed to cater for the well-being and comfort of the user within the built environment, just imagine the endless positive possibilities this would have for the people and animals who share built structures.

My service to you:
I can produce full sets of working drawings, 3D models in sketchup and manipulation in photoshop. I am deadline driven and value client relationships and needs. I do not need to be micro-managed and can run a project from start to finish.

Should you require any additional info from me or just want to chat, don’t hesitate to contact me.

I am willing to relocate.
